Full low-ground deck rebuild, drainage upgrade, custom storage benches, lighting, and outdoor kitchen installation.
This Mosman backyard had an existing low-ground Merbau deck that had reached the end of its service life. The framing was buried in soil, drainage was poor, and both the structure and decking had become rotten and loose. Rather than repeat the same construction issues, the owners wanted a complete rebuild designed for long-term durability, together with a custom outdoor kitchen, integrated storage benches, and lighting to transform the area into a practical entertaining space.
The biggest challenge was below the surface. Around eight cubic metres of soil had to be removed to create proper drainage and clearance beneath the new deck. The original H3 framing had been installed directly in the ground, leaving timber and fixings constantly exposed to moisture. We needed to rebuild the area with durable H4 framing, new footings, drainage gravel and retaining support, while carefully planning ventilation around the wide picture-frame boards and integrating benches, lighting and a fully custom kitchen into the same compact space.
For a low-ground deck, longevity starts underneath. We rebuilt this area from the ground up, addressing drainage, ventilation and structural protection before installing the new Tallowwood surfaces and custom features. Every part of the project was coordinated as one system, from groundworks and framing through to the kitchen, lighting, stone, appliances and final timber finish.
We removed the failed deck and approximately eight cubic metres of soil, formed drainage and retaining support, installed new footings, and rebuilt the substructure in H4 treated pine. G-Tape was added over the framing, while dedicated picture-frame supports were designed to preserve drainage and airflow between the perimeter and field boards.
We installed 136 x 22 mm Tallowwood decking, custom hinged storage benches with recessed LED lights, and a fully framed and waterproofed outdoor kitchen clad in matching timber. After tannin activation and removal, the timber was sanded and finished with Cutek Extreme CD50 in Autumn Tone Double Strength. Stone, gas, BBQ and fridge installation were coordinated to complete the space.
The completed backyard is now a fully integrated entertaining area built around correct drainage, ventilation and durable H4 framing. The wide Tallowwood decking, matching storage benches and custom outdoor kitchen create one cohesive finish, while lighting and appliances make the space practical after dark. Most importantly, the underlying construction has been rebuilt to avoid the moisture-related failures that damaged the original deck.
