Fijian Mahogany Deck Restoration in Haberfield
Deep cleaning, rejuvenation, fine multi-stage sanding, and penetrating oil application.
- Timber: Fijian Mahogany
- Size: Medium (30-70m²)
- Completed in September 2026

Project Overview
After around 14 years of use, this Fijian Mahogany deck in Haberfield had become faded, weathered and affected by moss, mould and fungal growth. The owners wanted to refresh the entire outdoor area and shift the timber toward a darker tone that would complement the Black Japan-style flooring inside the home. The goal was to create a richer, more refined appearance while still keeping the natural grain visible and clearly distinct from the interior floor.
The Challenge
The main challenge was the timber itself. Fijian Mahogany is a comparatively soft hardwood and requires a far more delicate restoration process than denser Australian hardwoods. The area was also narrow and detailed, with stairs, a bench, handrails and tall vertical siding, limiting the use of larger sanding equipment. Every stage had to be carefully controlled to avoid over-sanding, surface damage or wash marks while still removing years of weathering and biological growth.
Scope of Work
Materials Used
- Timber: Fijian Mahogany Hardwood
- Sanding: 80-240 Grit Multi-Stage Sanding
- Preparation: Deep Clean & Timber Rejuvenation
- Finish: Cutek Extreme CD50, Walnut Double Strength
Our Approach & Process
Fijian Mahogany rewards careful preparation. Rather than treating it like a denser hardwood, we adjusted the washing and sanding process to suit the softer timber, working progressively through the surface before applying a penetrating finish selected to complement the home’s darker interior palette.
Deep Cleaning & Timber Rejuvenation
We deep-cleaned the deck to remove moss, mould, fungal growth and embedded contamination, then rejuvenated the timber to restore a clean, even base. Extra care was taken around the narrow layout, stairs, bench, handrails and vertical siding where controlled manual work was essential.
Fine Multi-Stage Sanding & Oiling
Because Fijian Mahogany is relatively soft, we used a progressive sanding sequence from approximately 80 grit through to a very fine 240 grit finish. Two coats of Cutek Extreme CD50 with Walnut Double Strength tint were then applied, creating a deep warm tone while keeping the natural timber grain clearly visible.
The Final Result
The completed deck now has a rich, warm walnut appearance that complements the darker interior flooring without becoming overly black or opaque. The Fijian Mahogany grain remains visible throughout, while the restored surfaces feel clean, refined and protected. The result gives this 14-year-old outdoor space a completely refreshed character without losing the natural beauty of the original timber.
